What I Left Behind

by Marion van den Ende

This is a face torn in two by a single crack. On one side still whole; on the other my skin dissolves into a city on fire. What falls into rubble on the right has not disappeared — I carry it with me.

The landscape you carry within

Those who survive war or flight carry more than a suitcase. The past withdraws into the body and lives on behind the eyes: a smell, a sound, a street that is no longer there. Psychology calls it trauma, but the word is too small for what is shown here — it is more like a second landscape that a person carries within.

The two eyes look out differently: one warm and present, the other cool and elsewhere. That is often how it feels inside — partly here, partly still there. And yet this is not an image of defeat. The crack does not break the face apart; it holds both halves together. What was left behind is not lost. It has become part of who someone is — and it is precisely that which makes a person not weaker, but fuller.
