Weathered Soul
Self-Love
by Marion van den Ende
My eyes closed, my own hand upon my shoulder. No one else is holding me — I do that myself. Around me the flowers bloom, and for the first time that is enough.

A hand on one's own shoulder
Self-love is not the same as pride or vanity. It is something quieter and far harder: the willingness to be kind to yourself, even on the days you feel you do not deserve it. The hand upon one's own shoulder is the oldest gesture of comfort there is — and the most beautiful when it comes from oneself.
Many people learn only late that they need not wait for another's embrace. The magnolias around her bloom only briefly, but completely; they hold nothing back. So too does she: at last in flower, at last without apology.
Within this series this is an image of peace. Where other works show the cracks, this one shows the healing — the moment someone comes home to themselves.
