The guardian of keen mind
The German Shepherd arose in Germany at the end of the nineteenth century. From 1899, Captain Max von Stephanitz set out to form a single standardised breed from the existing herding dogs: an intelligent, strong and willing dog, originally intended for herding and protecting sheep. What began as a herding dog grew within a few decades into one of the most versatile working dogs in the world.
It is precisely that versatility that makes the breed so remarkable. The German Shepherd is exceptionally intelligent, eager to learn and reliable, and is therefore employed the world over in police, military and rescue work and as a guide and assistance dog. At the same time it is a loyal and protective companion, strongly attached to its owner and family.
Its appearance is as recognisable as it is impressive: an athletic, slightly sloping body, upright ears and a dense coat, classically in the tan-and-black marking. Elena Vittori places the emphasis on the alert, intelligent eyes that betray the animal's attentiveness. The fresco treatment gives the coat the texture of old plaster, as though this faithful guardian were stepping forward from a centuries-old scene.
