The faithful companion
The Golden Retriever arose in the second half of the nineteenth century in Scotland. On his estate, Lord Tweedmouth deliberately crossed various dogs to breed an outstanding retriever — a gundog that brought shot game back undamaged from water and field. That selection produced a dog with a soft mouth, good stamina and a strikingly biddable character, which would later develop into one of the most popular breeds in the world.
That character is its greatest strength. The Golden Retriever is known as friendly, intelligent and exceptionally trainable. It is patient with children, sociable towards people and animals, and so reliable that it is widely employed as a guide dog, assistance dog and rescue dog. Willingness to work and gentleness go hand in hand in it.
In appearance it is recognised by its dense, water-repellent coat in shades from light to deep gold, its wavy hair and its friendly, well-balanced head. Elena Vittori places the emphasis on the warm, expressive eyes that so characterise the breed. The fresco treatment gives the golden coat the glow of old plaster, as though the light of centuries were stored within it.
