The child who looks on
We often think the child we were is left behind, somewhere far in the past. But it does not work that way. Everything we once felt — the first wonder, the first fear, the first longing — lives on, layer beneath layer, in who we are today. The child is not a memory; it is a fellow traveller.
In the background drift fragments of handwriting, like the pages of a diary that was never closed. Growing older does not lose that child; it is where we finally learn to understand it. The upward gaze is one of reconciliation: to look back not with sorrow, but with tenderness.
It is a gentle image within a series that often speaks of fractures. For sometimes the deepest movement of the soul is not a crack, but an embrace — of oneself, across all the years.
