The many selves in one
Every person carries many faces: who we are with our child, at our work, in our grief, in our joy. Most of the time we move between them smoothly, without noticing. But there are times when those faces seem to come apart, when you wonder which of them is the real one.
In this work the faces flow in and out of one another, the central face meeting your gaze while the others rise around it. The eyes align seamlessly — this is not a splitting as in illness, but the ordinary multiplicity of a rich inner life. We simply are more than one thing.
In the background is handwriting, like the many stories that together make one biography. The fresco treatment binds the faces into the same weathered surface: different, and yet unmistakably one person.
