A face with closed eyes among weathered autumn leaves and stone, painted in the Heritage Fresco style

Weathered Soul

Quiet Grief

by Marion van den Ende

My eyes are closed, my face at rest. The leaves fall around me and I let them fall. This is grief that is no longer a storm, but stillness.

When grief comes to rest

Grief has its seasons. At first comes the storm: the disbelief, the sharp pain, the resistance. But as time goes on, sorrow changes in nature. It grows softer, quieter — not less, but more bearable. That is quiet grief: the point at which you no longer fight the loss, but carry it with you.

The face in this work is closed and peaceful, surrounded by autumn leaves that decay as all things decay. There is no despair left, only a deep, accepted melancholy. Grief, after all, is not a problem to be solved; it is the other side of love, and that remains.

The fresco treatment lets skin, stone and leaf pass into one another, as though the woman is slowly becoming part of the season itself. It is one of the stillest images of the series — a tribute to everyone who has learned to carry their loss in peace.
