Where the series began
This was my very first work — the image in which I first saw what I truly wanted to make. Two faces, one person: the familiar outside, and the other that lives on beneath it, half dissolved into the wall. From this dividing grew the whole series, *Weathered Soul*.
*Gespletenheid* — dividedness — is a feeling almost everyone knows: the gap between who you show and who you are within. Not as a lie, but as protection — one half keeps the world at bay while the other stays safe. It is the ordinary two-voicedness of a person holding themselves together.
The fresco treatment lets that second half slowly fade into the stone, as though it had always been there. It is not a fracture that hurts, but an honest portrait of what it is to be more than one thing at once.
