What Burns in Me

by Marion van den Ende

On the outside I am quiet, my eyes closed. But look into the cracks of my skin and you will see it glow: the anger I do not show, yet which burns all the same.

The glow beneath the crust

Anger has a bad name. We are taught to swallow it, laugh it away, keep it tidy — women most of all. But suppressed anger does not vanish; it sinks inward and smoulders there, like fire beneath a sealed crust.

In this work that is made literal: the face is stilled, almost resigned, yet embers glow between the cracked plaster. This is not destruction — it is vitality that found no way out. Anger, too, is a form of self-worth: the sign that a line has been crossed, that something in you says 'no'.

The fresco treatment makes that hidden glow tangible. The image invites not fear, but recognition: that what burns in us deserves to be seen, before it consumes us.
