A face with closed eyes and a cloth about the head, half weathered, painted in the Heritage Fresco style

Weathered Soul

Inner Flight

by Marion van den Ende

When the world becomes too much, I close my eyes and go within. Not running away — that is not always possible — but withdrawing to the quiet room deep inside myself.

The quiet room within

Not every flight is a flight of the feet. Sometimes the only way out is inward: to close your eyes, shut out the noise, retreat into an inner space the world cannot reach. For those who carry a heavy load, that is often a necessary place of survival.

It is a double thing. Inner flight protects — it gives rest, breath, distance — but stay too long and you drift loose from the life outside. The cloth about the head in this work is both shelter and enclosure: held safe, yet also a little hidden.

The fresco treatment lets one half of the face fall away into the plaster, as though she is half in the world and half beyond it. It is a gentle, understanding image of something we all sometimes need: to be, for a moment, unreachable.
