A face with a hand to the head and tears, downward drips running through the plaster, painted in the Heritage Fresco style

Weathered Soul

Heaviness

by Marion van den Ende

There are days when everything is heavy. My hand props up my head, a tear finds its way down, and it seems as if the gravity is inside me rather than beneath me.

The weight that pulls downward

Heaviness of heart is not grief for something particular; it is a weight that lies on everything, even the good things. All takes more effort — rising, speaking, hoping. Those who know it know it is not weakness, but carrying what has become too heavy.

In this work everything pulls downward: the hand, the gaze, the tears, the vertical drips that run like rain through the plaster. And yet there is that one hand still holding up the head — a small gesture of 'I am still holding myself'. Heaviness is not the end; it is a season to be carried until the light returns.

The fresco treatment gives that leadenness a tangible form, as though the face itself has turned to stone. It is an honest image — not desolate, but compassionate: a recognition of everyone who carries the weight.
