A face gazing upward, surrounded by weathered leaves, painted in the Heritage Fresco style

Weathered Soul

Longing

by Marion van den Ende

My gaze goes upward, toward something I cannot name but surely feel. Longing is the hunger of the soul — the proof that I still hope.

The gaze that reaches

Longing is a double feeling. It aches, for it points to something not yet here — a person, a life, a home, a version of yourself. And at the same time it is the most alive thing we have: only those who still long still believe there is something to reach.

The face in this work looks upward, away from the earth, toward something beyond grasp. The weathered leaves around it decay, but the gaze does not — it reaches. So too is longing: it keeps us moving through times that take everything else away.

The fresco treatment lays the patina of time over the face, yet leaves the eyes clear. For longing does not age with us; it stays young, even as the rest weathers. It is perhaps the most hopeful image of the series.
